Not Quite Sure....?

Since YOU are the blog readers, I would like your personal vote....
I am doing a trial run for squarespace.com because I like the search engine feature, archives, and big pictures (without a host site).
I'd like to know which blog you like best!

1. The one I have now!

2. This New blog I've been working on.

Let me know, I need your input!

The Blog is Moving

This blog is finding a new residence~ I have been using a host site to post all my pictures (that's why they're so big) and Matt asked a very simple question yesterday:

him: "What happens if the host site goes down?"
me: "uhhhh....never considered that."

So I'm finally caving and getting an account that will do it all for me and secure my work. No more teaching myself html code to try to get the details just how I want them! I'll be a busy bee the next few days, I updated my website too if you haven't already checked that out feel free to do so. I'll let you know when the new blog is up and running!

A New Start

Beginnings are always scary... new jobs, new relationships, new towns. They all force you to face the unknown. You're entering a territory that may not be comfortable. Today I caught myself complaining about my new starts, then it hit me -- at least I have one.

Some people don't even get the chance to experience newness. Maybe because circumstances in their lives that keep them from being able to experience change, so they are forced to stand in idle. Change has heightened my sense of self-awareness. It has allowed me to find courage through starting over with my business, and it has given me appreciation for the things that DO remain timeless and true: my faith, family, and sweet husband.

So next time I find myself standing on start and rolling my eyes because I can't even see the finish line - I'll remember, at least I'm moving.

It's REVAMP time!

It was Christmas as the Stricklin household yesterday. I never knew I had so much cheer power in me until I saw the mail lady carrying a box with my 5D in it. No more Rebelxti, it's time to bust out the big guns!

So I'm on a mission. We are out taking pictures today for business cards. I've already updated my intro page and parts of my website. I'm going to fix my blog when I return, I realize it is a drab white right now. Change is about to take place, my friends.

Check back today for our new and improved pictures!

Add a +1 to the Family

Photobucket
I have the fever.... the kind that drives my husband NUTS.... puppy fever!!!

In my heart I feel that the Stricklin's are one mut short. I love little Marlie to pieces, but there's something inside me that says...."there's more to come." With big watery eyes I begged Matt to take me to the pound today so we could rescue our new pup, but he was like a stone. A rugged, cold, stubborn stone. In time, I will smooth out those edges and convince him though. At least that's what I tell myself.

The next dog will be BIG. I've always grown up around big dogs (we've had 5!). Since I now feel that God is leading me to pursue photography full time, I'm alone by myself a lot during the day... I want some more company and protection around here!

Raw vs. Jpeg.

After one solid year of fighting it.... I'm a believer.
The battle has been won folks, and RAW gets the medal of honor.

Matt has been begging me to switch to RAW forever and a day but I'm stubborn.
So today it was on...we went outside and I triumphantly rooted for my Jpeg team, convinced that it is was indeed the best. I had it in the bag. We raced upstairs to compare the results.

The evidence is here for the viewing.

Photobucket

Photobucket

***When I loaded the RAW image, a box popped up with all the ways to adjust the photo - curves, shadows, saturation, etc. I was able to do it all in about 1 minute. Usually it takes me a long time to fix a picture because I spend so long picking out the "perfect formula" of actions. So simple, I wish I would've listened sooner!

The Next D. Wade

Matt has a crazy Dwayne Wade dunk. I mean we're talking crrrrrazy vertical.
i love my gym class hero.

I played with ISO at Matt's game tonight. I'm still learning so much! I have the eye, and Matthew has the mechanic brain. We make a good team! So, basically I'm trying to get down-to-basics before I get my 5D. I CANT WAIT.

Great Expectations

I was headed on my usual path home, but i got lost in the music... I took a hasty right turn into a neighborhood filled with crisply polished lawns and 3-car garages. While in college, during a thoughtful night I would drive way out into the country and let my mind wander freely.
.......What type of family lives in that refined white house? Do they love each other? ........Is their life similar to how they expected it would be?
I found a warming comfort in the feeling of the chilling air running through my car as it chased out sound waves of music. Dreaming is medicine for my soul.

Is my life all that I expected it to be? Most certainly not. Do I often feel trapped by the burden of doubt or anticipation? Of course, new beginnings will do that to you. I've come to the conclusion that the burden of doubt is mostly a result of expectations. I commonly use expectations as an excuse for self-preservation. If I expect the worst....I take no risk. If I expect the best, I could be in for a series of let-downs. Where is the safe realm of expectations? More importantly, what are we allowed to expect from humans without turning out disappointed at the end of the day?

Maybe God has laid this on my heart to reveal that when we expect from others, we forget to expect from ourselves. Suddenly the matters of our own heart are replaced by idealizations of what we believe someone else should be doing. Leaps of faith are necessary, the result at the end is not the important part, but rather the journey to get there.

The only person holding the pen to write the script of my life is God. I might try to scratch through some of the lines He has written every now and then, but ultimately the ending will take form exactly as the Author planned.

This is one thing I can expect.

Photobucket

I need to take a lesson from nature. This big guy doesn't seem to concern himself with worries or doubts. As Matthew 6 says, if God plans out the life of a bird, surely He cares for His own children.
*Credits for this beautiful bird shot go to Matt. He spotted him in the tree a few mornings ago and snapped it with our 70-200mm. :)

Raindrops on Roses, Whiskers on Kittens...

So maybe I'm no Julie Andrews.....here are a few of MY favorite things....

1. A recent read. Suspensful, bone-chilling, love story that is guaranteed to make you quietly exit the room to cry (bitter-sweet tears).

Photobucket

2. An instant RAVE: smells and tastes like vanilla ice cream goodness, my lips don't stick to Matt's and it actually LASTS! I wore Perfect Face Cosmetics at my wedding and have been wearing them since. Before, I was simply a mascara and moisturizer girl.....not anymore! (pictured: Lexa + Beehive)

Photobucket

3. My little pup Marlie, who will be the big ONE years old next month. The neighborhood pooches are already getting together a wild kegger to celebrate. Ok, not really.

Photobucket

4. ROCKBAND!!! This is my so-hot-right-now character, named Ella Gray. A girl can dream, ok?! And yes, I designed her asymmetrical bob. The best part is you get to go rockstar shopping after performing. Ohhhh yeah.

Photobucket

Matt's has split personalities: his drummer is Ryder an emo dude. The Guitarist is covered in tats and dreads, his name is Lex.

Photobucket

5. My husband's bootyliscious Rock n' Republics! What?? I can say that now. we're married! :)

Loving Equally

I'm thinking twice about my judgments...my critiques and barriers I put up against people. The Heavenly Father isn't selective with who He loves, so why do I think I have the right to be?

After spending so much time trying to perfect myself and it is only in my inability to do so that I've found true freedom. It's a daily challenge to humbly serve - to love the least. During Jesus' 33 years on earth, He didn't find the most well-respected, non-annoying, rich individuals - He found the lame. The lepers laying at the end of dark allies. The woman whose bedroom was consistently occupied by lust-hungry men. The conning traders and thieves. He found the least and accepted them as his adopted sons and daughters.

"The KING replied, "Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for Me." -Matthew 25:40

***This is a picture of my best friend Beth's fiance. It may seem random, but it just ties in with my daily thought process.....she always pictured herself being whisked away by some indie-music loving, free-spirited kinda lad. Instead, the Lord brought her Jacob, a kind-hearted good ole' country boy. If she had judged him initially, she would've missed the man of her dreams. A girl's gotta love a cowboy :)

Are You Ready for Some Football?!?!!

I'm pretty neutral on who wins this time around. Once the Cowboys lost, I was spent. We are the 4th youngest team, though, so we claim our victory! Even though I am NOT a fan of the Giants, I do tend to root for the underdogs! And, I think Brady has had his glory...I mean come on, who gets to win the superbowl, be undefeated, and date Gisele Bundchen!!? He's livin' la vita loca!

WHO WILL IT BE???

It Takes Two, Baby.

The weather here has been stormy and freezing cold. It gives Matthew and I a chance to stay in, snuggle by the fire, and eat cookies and milk. Last night we had a movie night and watched Stardust. If you haven't seen it yet you should-- it's an enchanting film.

All this quality time is surfacing the fact that living with someone can be tough. Someone I love so passionately has the ability to make me feel strongly capable of great things and also has the power to crush my spirit with one misinterpreted comment. I'm quickly noticing that love can bring out the best and the worst in me. You're used to having things your way when it's just you. Suddenly another person slides in, and those towels you neatly folded aren't so neat anymore. The midnight trip to the bathroom you used to take with no problem now ends with your butt falling into the bowl because someone *no names* forgot to put the seat down. The lesson is in learning to bend. At what point do I remove the death grip I have on the guns in my holsters and realize that love is bigger than just me?

I believe that most of love is about rolling to the middle. At the end of the day when the lights fade, do we stay tucked away in our separate corners or do we neglect pride and meet in the middle?

See, I told you that I need a job. And thanks for all of your advice, I have applied at 8 places in a variety of fields so we will see what happens. I'll keep you posted :)

Homebody

I've got to get a job.

I've always considered myself a homebody, but with my husband gone to law school all day, the company of a cat and dog is just not quite enough. I can't wait to get to the point where I do photography full-time. But since I started my business when I was in college, had another job, and traveled every weekend to see Matt, I've never had the chance to pursue it full-fledged.

Here are the potential job ideas (other than photography)
1. An editor
2. Temp at some company
3. nanny?? I do love kids!
4. Office Manager of a photography company/Assistant

Any help??

Here are some pictures from a session I did awhile ago. More current ones to come once I get my computer moved in.

"Mahalo"

"Mahalo" is Thank You in Hawaiian. I've been writing a thousand thank you notes for wedding gifts. I took this task upon myself because let's face it, here's what a guy's thank you note would look like:

Dear _____,
Thank you for it.

Love,
unemotional boy

Of course mine are filled with different adjectives to express gratitude, specific notes about HOW we are going to use the gift cards, etc. Lets just say it took me 4 hours to write 35 after the bridal shower.

On my breaks, I'm editing pictures from Hawaii....

I had my back to the shore for this upclose shot....and I got TOTALLY drenched! My camera no longer works. Stupid interesting barnacles & shells cost me a fortune.

Our Wedding Slideshow

I finally bought Show It web! There is a discount code for it so if you don't have it yet, now is the time. The discount code is "star" after Jasmine Star. Apparently her and David Jay, the creator, are buddies so he's helping folks out! So I'm going to make a slideshow of the wedding today, then one of the honeymoon soon.

Sorry for the post being alllll about me lately, but a lot is going on that I feel inclined to share. My "sabbatical" is now over and I'm booking again which I'm thrilled about!

Weeee're Back!

I can't wait to post some pictures from our honeymoon. Right now we're busy unpacking and getting settled in. My sweet husband is sleeping next to me, the plane rides/time change wore us both out.

Stay tuned, I'll show you the beauties of Hawaii!

Quick Note from MRS. STRICKLIN

Howdy folks,
Quick note....no computers allowed on the honeymoon....but I wanted to at least share with you my bridal slideshow and a few wedding quick shots that my friends took at the wedding! Our pictures were taken at around 4:00 and there was not a cloud in the sky. The lighting was a photographers dream! The professional pics will come later and most certainly pictures of Hawaii :)

I was sorta squashed by Matt and his dad.... don't they favor each other?

Sicklings

The soon-to-be bride and groom are both sicklings. I sound like a man. Matt sounds like a boy going through middle-school puberty. I called him yesterday morning to get a phone number from him and he was calling out the numbers.."5-6-5 (hit high octave note) 4-8 (hit high note again) 4-8." Our wedding vows could be interesting.

I hope yall are enjoying fellowship with family and friends, cherishing the sweet time we have with each other.

And foooooooood. For breakfast I had 2 servings of each of the 3 entrees. When Matt came over last night he found icing from cinnamon rolls in my hair. Shortly after I was nicknamed "Porky." Fair enough.

Merry Christmas, happy holidays, feliz navidad!

The winner is Julie of Julie Jones Photography! Congrats on being the 1st to answer correctly!

I must say I was really impressed with those who answered and got it right. I suppose I have more loyal blog readers than I thought. So thank you also Jennifer of Vansuydam Photography, Kenzie of Shores Photography and E. of Elizabeth Pellette Photography. You guys are all great sources of inspiration to me!

1-2-3-GO!

I got across the stage without falling! Matt said I might as well have been a three-year old waiting in line to meet Santa. He said I still do the same nervous moves that I did when I was a little girl in home videos. I stood in line, grabbed the ends of my graduation dress (more like tarp!) and swung back and forth. I'm a little girl sometimes.

Here is my weekend agenda:
Friday, pack up everything in house.
7 pm, Graduation dinner.
Saturday, 11pm I graduated.
From about 12-3pm I moved out of my house.
From 4-6 we drove to Houston.
From 6-8 we moved into Houston.
Breathe. Relax.
Now unload all boxes to my new house.
Pack for Tyler for 2 weeks. Dont forget a thing cause it is YOUR wedding.
Pack for Hawaii honeymoon.
Drive from Houston back to College Station to pick up remains of boxes.
Drive to Tyler.
Prepare for wedding.

It's been crazy but fun! I'm getting used to the change a bit. Here are some pics from the busy weekend:Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Update: College Life Over.

Do you ever find yourself dreaming of that finish line constantly and when you finally feel it break on your tired ribs, a beautiful feeling of both sweetness and sadness flushes over you?

The race you had trained so hard for has now come to an end. Yes, you successfully endured every minute. Yes, there is a powerful release that the destination was worth the journey. Following the feelings of accomplishments can also be a feeling of "ok, now what?"

I'm working on my last final EVER. I've waited for this moment and I pictured I might do a victory dance down the streets or at least let out a zealous squeal. Much to my amusement, none of this has occurred. I'm instead encompassed by reflections of my college life, sweet friends who have lightened the load along the way and filled me with both laughter and tears, and the endless lessons God has taught me with each passing step.

My dreams have taken the following:
--a psychologist in training
--an environmental designer
--a sonogram technician
--a sign language translator
--a photographer
All these is just 3.5 years!

I'm feeling the release of the closing one chapter and opening another as a "Mrs." I hope that in 3.5 years I can look back and reflect on growth and memories with those I cherish with a grateful heart and humbled spirit.

Christa's Bridals

Sheesh, it's been almost a year and I'm just now posting these. This was my first bridal session...I don't typically take them on. Christa and Seth were my "trial run" for wedding photography. They were very laid-back and sweet.

I commend ALL wedding photographers. How you keep your cool is beyond me. I would need to attach a breathing machine to my shootsac, cause I would be so stressed!! I much prefer to be the person in the audience snapping pictures like I did at John and Edit's. No pressure. Ahhh...the sweetness of that phrase.

Now I just need to find me some big-bellied women, a few crazy toddlers, and some funky-fresh seniors and my business will be headed in the right direction!

Mr. Blue Eyes

In just 24 days, Mr. Blue Eyes will be the face I wake up to each morning and the last voice I hear at night. We have dealt with the distance and held on to the hope that one day we would be around each other daily. No more "Is it Friday yet?!" No more serious case of the Mondays. Just a bunch of spooning and laughter.

I haven't shared this with you guys yet, but I think I will now! It's our wedding website. So go right ahead and look around if you want. And does anyone have experiences/ideas for writing your own vows? We really want to do it but are afraid of being a bunch of blubbering idiots! So I would love your input!Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The What If Game

I play this all the time.
What if I had been brave enough to chase my dreams and run off to the East Coast? What if I hadn't met Matt, would I have discovered my love for photography? What if I had the courage to say 'yes' at the option of singing at that wedding?

The list goes on, it's endless. For once, I want to flip over the lose-a-turn card so my mind can catch a break from this exhausting game. The redundancy of the question leaves me standing in a danger zone. Entertaining the idea of a life that is different than the one Ive chosen is an idle trap. We are where we are for a reason, I believe in divine positioning rather than a series of coincidences strung together to compose one life.

"Our minds get blown away by thoughts of aliens and other worlds but my mind is blown away by possibility that maybe this was made for me, for lying on my back in the middle of a field- to look up and see that God loves me that much. The Psalms say that the stars speak every language so that NO man goes without hearing God." ----Sara Groves

This quote moved me to tears when I heard her say it. We are a small freckle on the Savior's great map. But He notices us. He cares enough to number our days and memorize how many hairs are on our heads. He is in the air around us each day. Each second. And when we feel overwhelmed by the possibilities or feel burdened from second guessing ourselves, we can just look up and be humbled by the number of the stars in the midnight sky.
Suddenly, the what-if game loses its appeal.

Maybe this was made for me.

Maybe my life is merely a path, filled with God-ordained steps for me to take.
I'm tired of asking WHAT IF, I want to appreciate WHAT IS.

Ch-Ch-Changes

It is almost that time, people. I will be sharing half of my stuff with a man. This is a new concept for me. I'm excited about it though! Today has been filled with shirt-hanging, good-will bagging, and watching Matt pry my hoarded nicknacks out of my grubby little paws. I am a pack rat. NOT a good quality to possess while trying to move from a 4 bedroom house with about 12 hidden closets into a 2 bedroom condo.

Moving digs up old memories. Each time I've moved in college (which has been about 6 times) I am always warmed by the bittersweetness of old photographs or notes from middle school-- little keepsakes that got piled beneath the mess. It's refreshing to stumble across them.

Tomorrow is less sentimental. I will be looking for a big girl job in Houston. That's right, say your prayers folks!

Morning Light

I took some quick shots of my roommate this morning at 9:00 A.M. She wanted some traditional pics for her graduation announcements that go out tomorrow. At this time, the light was just perfect! I will have to remember this.

Not sure if I've mentioned it before...but I am a music LOVER. Not just any music, but music that moves. If you havent seen August Rush, see it! The music is incredible! I am anxiously awaiting the soundtrack.

here's what's in my play list of songs I never get sick of:

Sara Groves - Something Changed
Joseph Arthur - Honey & the Moon
Mirah - Don't Die in Me
The Weepies - Gotta Have You
Sister Act II - Oh Happy Day
Rachael Yamagata - Jesus Was a Crossmaker
The Flaming Lips - Yoshima vs. the Robots
Reed Foehl - Indian Summer
Wheat - Don't I Hold You
Angels & Airwaves - Secret Crowds
Glen Hansard ft Markéta Irglová - Falling Slowly
Pete Yorn - Lose You
Beth Orton - Thinking About Tomorrow

Little Birds

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The birds flickered in, taking turns enjoying their colorful buffet of birdseed. Watching animals calms my mind, it is solely a therapeutic experience. The birds do not fret and get their feathers in a tiff trying to think of where they will find their next meal, worrying about whether their little speckled eggs are getting the warmth they need inside the twig-spun nest, or even if they will sing the right tune to attract a suitable mate. They just live. Why can’t we share this same trusting spirit?

Lord, I want to trust in Your promise to provide. Mold my heart into one filled with reliance and peace. Free me from the traps of self-guilt and idleness that the evil one sets before me.

Your ways are perfect.

Your will is pure.

You are the melody that my heart longs to sing.

Season of Grandure

I LOVE FALL.

In Texas, my favorite season is usually skipped through. The trees do turn, which i definitely appreciate, but the air is thick and the temperature high. So those few days when I do get to turn off the AC and roll down my windows, I am happy as a lark! Before my session today, Matt drug me away from my paper-writing spell and encouraged me to take little snaps of fall. Ironically, fall turned into Christmas around our household the same night--my Christmas-enthused roommate put up not one, not two, but THREE Christmas trees! So ladies (or gents) if you are reading this, and have already added Snow-in-a-Can to your windows, hung mistletoe, or slid a Christmas CD in your car, you are not alone. There are other jolly Christmas freaks out there. :)

Lessons from 3-Year Olds

In a hustled manner, my feet swished back and forth, trying to keep up with my racing thoughts. I whipped the corner and saw a bubble floating up above, then another, then another. On my tuesday-thursday route to class, I pass a day care. The typical scene if filled with at least one screaming child, but not today. Today they had bubbles! Each kid squealed as the teacher blew these round wonders up into the endless sky. They reached up as high as they could to catch as many as possible.

I was instantly jealous. Children have something I will never truly have: undamaged hearts. They enjoy life's simplicity and reach up high, without fear of the future.
Their love has not grown cold. Their faith is uncalloused. They've lost the sense of self that dominates so much of what we do as adults. I want to be there again.

Lord, today, I want to have the heart of a child---free to laugh without hesitation, free to trust those who are bigger than me, free to be myself in each moment.

Countdown Begins...

"I remember checking your wedding website and seeing the countdown say '200 days left'. Now it is almost a month away."

A MONTH. My dads words hit me like a freight train. The engagement journey has flown by with full-force. Suddenly everything has turned into a countdown- only 3 more papers to write EVER, and 2 written exams. Just yesterday the same girl who is now in athletic shorts with her hair pulled back was fumbling through dorm cabinets looking for that "perfect outfit" on the first day of school. The way time passes makes me wince, yet it makes me appreciate this blink-lengthed second.

I have slowed down my business so that I can remember this month. So the pictures I post may be a bit more personal for awhile. I hope you still come stop by though!

They Don't Call It A Shower For Nothing

The terminology wedding shower has been a bit strange to me. The bride doesn't run through a sprinkler or get an ice bucket dumped on her head, so why shower? After my first one today, I no longer ask why. You get completely DRENCHED with generous gifts! Matt and I signed over the official wedding contract with the Villa di Felicita this morning then headed over to our Wedding Shower. It was an eventful day! I am definitely not one to love the spotlight, but today was different. When you are in a room filled with people who are here to celebrate love, suddenly it's not really about just ME, its about the force of two hearts joining and all the wonderful blessings that dance along behind it.

So today, I was wrong. (Please don't copy and paste that and use it against me!) I thought I didn't want a wedding shower, but now I am thankful we had one! There wasn't even one cheek-pinch. :)

Here are some pictures with the point and shoot camera:

Our Announcement!

Matthew and I's engagement is published in our hometown paper! This is so exciting to see it in print. We just love our photographer, Agung Fauzi. He was wonderful for our engagement photos and my bridals. For our engagements, he took us all around South Lake and Ft. Worth, Tx. In honor of our newspaper announcement, I thought I'd post a few of our engagement pictures...enjoy!

A Must-Hear

Matt and I missed a conference in early August called Relationship Rx. It was in Houston and Les Parrot, Gary Smalley, and other writers/preachers were speaking. Since we missed it, Matt bought the Cd set. And let me tell you, it was nothing short of extraordinary. I have sort of been hogging them and listening to them when I drive from College Station to Houston. It's completely okay that my fellow road-travelers think I'm a crazy emotional woman when they see tears streaming down my cheeks.

I needed a wake-up call, a cold glass of water splashed on my sleepy heart. God just grabbed me a shook me around a bit to get the message to me that life goes beyond my little shell. To invest in the lives of others, I first have to stop constantly thinking about my own. Relationships are the greatest chance we get to practice God's love. He shows us how to be slow to anger and quick to listen, have patience when we want to scream, and how to love without fear. I will soon be thrown (happily launched, of course) into a world where I am a part of a man's everyday life. My prayer is that I compliment Matthew, through encouragement, support, and self-sacrificial love.

Unfortunately, you cannot purchase it online, but you can call 713-365-2317. Thats the Second Baptist Bookstore, they said they can send it to you!

Laughter is Medicine to the Soul

When I walked out the door I was foggy-headed and heavy-eyed. I grabbed my gear and walked down the stairs, hearing the sad cries of my whimpering pup in the background, and drove to downtown Houston. I had to snap out of it cause the engagement session was about to start!

Amanda and Ric were both filled with such kindness and they made me laugh. Laughter is such a missed art. It lifts the soul and restores energy to the heart.

As I came home, I walked through the same door I had trudged through before with a pep-in-my-step. I felt GIDDY from the session. Matthew made some comment about how I was acting like a little girl, and he found it endearing because he knew that I was finding fulfillment in what I was doing. I believe that when God gives you a gift and you use it to the best that you can for Him, this is the feeling He grants you. You feel like a kid again.

Details Galore

Ok, who has planned a wedding? Did you find the details overwhelming? I am for sure. I'm not really a detail-oriented person naturally, so this is all new to me. Which flowers go where, who is escorting who to their seat, where people will stay, etc. Last night Matthew sweetly said, "You just need to enjoy it. I'm here with you to help you calm down, but you can't run from everything." He's right. I am a RUN-NER. Not the best of qualities, but I'm working on it. I have full confidence that the fresh fruit and smooth beaches of Hawaii will soak up the aftermath of the wedding woos just fine :)

My favorite picture from the bridals I shot yesterday with Lauren. (This is the unedited picture.) Her green eyes are so piercing.

Food for thought: What Kind of Cookie Are You?

I love quizzes. Un-academic ones at least.
Apparently, I'm "exotic." HA!
So, what kind of cookie are you?

You Are a Jam Cookie

On the outside, you project a straight-laced, innocent vibe.

But on the inside, you're complex, exotic, and full of flavor.

I promise to update with photography-related topics soon. Tomorrow I have a bridal session with Lauren, so pictures are coming soon!

A Sentimental Mood

My freshman year was a tremendous growing experience for me. I was so caught up in myself and finding answers to every question I had in life...but the constant searching kept me seeking. God has taught me a great deal these past 3 and a half years at A&M. Although our identity is fluid, constantly changing and being reformed into who the Lord created us to be, it is nice to reflect back on the journey sometimes. This is the letter to myself I found while looking through old drawers today (written 9-30-05).

This year I'd like to learn how:
-To take baby steps.
-To stop worrying about what others think and just experience life from my own perspective.
-To live now instead of always thinking of tomorrow. Because all I'm given is now. God doesn't hand me the whole puzzle, He hands me pieces.
-To transform worries into prayers and remember that God does care about the little things.
-To be thankful. Instead of dreaming of what could be, I'd like to accept and appreciate what IS.
-To relax, remembering that if you don't slow down, you miss things.

That's a lot of things to want to learn in one year, right? At least I was hopeful! Have I successfully conquered these goals? No, and thats okay. Keeps me depending on the Lord. So thank you, Father, for still having faith in me and taking the time to help me grow.

Fearless Hearts & Twirling Skirts

When Matt and I were in downtown shooting a session last Saturday, we saw this amazing International Fair. I could've watched these sweet little oriental girls dance for hours. They were so peaceful up on that stage waving their arms and twirling in their skirts. It made me wish I could lapse back in time to the days when I was a child and the only thing to worry about was whether my mom was going to make me eat my tomatoes at dinner. Life is beautiful when you have a childlike heart.

City Lights

There is nothing like the city life. And folks, it will be my life in less than 3 months. Kinda weird since I've never lived in a city that would be classified as large. I grew up with deer in my yard and picking cactus was considered a punishment. Oh believe me, it was much worse than being grounded. No matter how thick the gloves, you still got pricked. Those were just the so-called "rough times." So many nights I would take a warm blanket, lay on our sloped driveway and look up at the stars. I remember being so humbled by how a small girl was living in such a big world. City life may have the fast cars and bright lights, but the country has STARS.

I Got Inked

Thats right, I got inked. Maroon Weekly, Texas A&M's newspaper, did a special on student entrepreneurs and called last week to interview me! On my goals for this year, I had put "to be published in a magazine or newspaper." When we were asked to do this at church I was a bit nervous....I always hate to ask for things cause I fear getting my hopes up and being disappointed. But its neat to see God work, to notice that He always exceeds expectations- limits are BOUNDLESS. If you are brave enough to seek direction, He will grant you answers. Below is the cover, with pictures from my sessions with Kristin West and Mandy & Jack.

Double Rings May Mean "Cha-Ching"

These past few months I have felt my heart slowly leaning more toward portrait photography rather then weddings. Although I do have a few upcoming weddings this next year that I'm excited about, I have decided to take a different route. Mostly because I love the innocence and free-spirited nature of children. The chance to spend time working with them and their loving parents excites me more than any other field of work. I also love seniors. Several years ago, I too was one, and getting ready for my senior pictures was a blast! I wanted the photograph to be valid evidence that I had changed, that I was really beginning to spread my wings.

Just thought you guys would appreciate the update and it explains why the "wedding" gallery on my page has gone MIA. A while back I sought some advice from the incredibly talented Asher of Eden Photography, and she only helped confirmed my joy for working with younger adults and children! Check her out, you guys will be amazed and inspired.

Need Your Input

HI folks,
I am trying to venture out for this next session I am doing. I need your ideas--themes, clothes, etc! The couple I am shooting are open for anything fun!

PLEASE leave comments below -----

83 days...

83 is my favorite number. No clue why. But now that is officially how many days are left until I become Mrs. Stricklin! In honor of this, I'd like to give a shout out to Matthew... my best friend, fellow business partner (one day), and soul mate. You bring so much light to my life. I love you. Let me show you the many faces of my handsome Matthew:

BUZZworthy

Please look at what my roommate brought home for our 3 dogs to wear. For Halloween, Kay had a vision of us all being a hive of bees, and Brandon (who lives in the side apartment of our house) is the beekeeper. That's right, the mesh over the face, covered in black beekeeper. We are a big offbeat. More pics to come around Halloween, but for now here's Marlie in her new attire....

Jack + Mandy Engagement Session

Couples like these two make my job worthwhile. There is a sweet chemistry between them, the kind that you just want to be close to. Their spark leaks into the lives of others, creating wildfires of change. Love should be like this. It should radiate and touch the lives of others. After all, it's not meant to be bottled up...it's mean to share. So thank you Mandy and Jack for sharing with Matthew and I. It was like a breath of fresh air.

Modern-Day Proverbs 31 Woman

We are studying in my women's Bible study group what exactly it means to be a Proverbs 31 woman. I thought I'd share the vision God gives me of a day in the life of a modern-day Proverbs 31 woman:

It began with a merciless scream from her child's room, followed by a consistent effort to wake up a sleepy-eyed adolescent daughter. She distributes their hand-packed lunches, each carefully initialed by a letter. When they leave, she begins the day of preparation. After all, there are groceries to be bought, clothes to be washed and put away, and bills to be paid. No one said idleness was even an option.

Her world spins incessantly fast but her heart is at peace. After a long day of servanthood, she takes off the white undershirt with the almost-strategically placed spit-up markings and slips on her most flattering purple cashmere blouse. Purple: the color of royalty, a dazzling compliment to her pacific blue eyes. In the distance, the tic-toc of familiar footsteps is heard...he's home. Her beloved has arrived from his equally demanding day in the workplace. She turns the corner to greet him. Her eloquent beauty still provides him with the perfect safe haven to return home to.

Over dinner, she eagerly listens as her children gush over the details of their day. They have great admiration for her and though they do not always show it, they desperately seek to be just like her one day. And yes, she notices that the edges of the toast are slightly burnt and maybe her chicken is lacking its usual tenderness, yet she doesn't focus on the wrongs, but rather sinks into the delights of the rights. As she vigorously scrubs the dirty dishes, she says not one utterance that would resemble complaint, and instead thinks of how she can serve next. Her heart is meek. Her motive, humble. And when those linen sheets fold up tightly around her neck at night, she is thankful for today and by no means threatened by tomorrow. Her peace-filled heart knows that tomorrow will bring its own set of problems and worrying won't change them. She sweetly kisses her husband goodnight and he smiles because the same thankfulness leaks into his body. He notices that she brings so may vibrant colors to his previously black-and-white world. Her eyes become heavy as she spins into much-needed sleep. Tomorrow will rise with the same purpose: to serve others and be a catalyst for change, regardless of circumstance. Her gentle spirit will not ask for praise for these great deeds that often go unnoticed, but the Lord is watching, and He certainly notices. And for her, that's enough.

Celebelicious

I realize I have WAY too much time on my hands, but you have got to try this: www.myheritage.com

Constant Tug-of-War

I was tired and worn out but that play button wouldn't stop staring at me. "Just go to bed, you need sleep" tugged one voice. The other said "Push play, I'd like to remind you of something," so I did. Five minutes later tears are streaming down both cheeks like the great rapids. God just wanted to remind me that everyday is a spiritual battle, whether good or bad. And no matter how much sin may infest our hearts and thoughts, we are always sweetly placed in the hands of a loving Father. We can rest assured that the battle has been fought- and although the enemy may put up a heavy fight, the KING will be the only one with a seat at the throne.

So I encourage you to push play- and I hope it moves you the way it did me.

Home of LeeAnn Womack

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketPhoto Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Here are a few fun shots I took of my mom (against her will) in Jacksonville, Tx- Home of LeeAnn Womack! The first is a straight head shot of her. The woman amazes me, 47 years old and people still thinks shes my sister! Let's hope I got her aging genes.

The legacy continues...

The big ole' gold beauty finally has hit my hands! After 3.5 years of finals, late-night cram sessions, and a newfound obsession for all "munchie" foods, I finally have some gold to show for it.

If you are out of state reading this, you probably think, "Its just a graduation ring? Mine is in a box somewhere." No no, not here in Aggieland. Ring day is an EVENT. Tents filled with water to keep hydrated, dunking festivals, and professional photographers to make sure and capture a piece of your day. It's a big deal... its the pinnacle of your career as an Aggie. And yesterday I became a part of that legacy.

Hello all... If you or someone you know needs the following please leave a comment below:

-maternity portraits
-children's portraits

I am really wanting to try out these areas of photography, since it is the area I feel I would like to end up focusing on. If you let me know, I will give them a 50% off of a session fee! I would really appreciate it! It's been hard to find mom's who want pictures in a college-based town.

Autumn Enters

I will be out of town this weekend. I'm off to shoot a session with the captain of the Kilgore Rangerettes! So I will leave you with this little poem to get you excited about my most favorite season, FALL!
***********************************
The leaves slowly trickle from the trees
Leaving a crunch for innocent children's feet
Birds snuggle up close on a wire
Turtlenecks and scarfs become necessary attire
A cool breeze sweeps in to refresh
Women find warmth in their lover's caress
Intriguing colors begin to take flight
A blanket of renewal covers all nature in sight
So come closer, my love, fall is near
Beauty is not easily perceived unless you are here.

here's Miss Marlie who is about to be 6 months, she's grown so fast!

The Right Time

I was frantic as a I searched through old drawers - hastily shuffling through notes kept from 7th grade, a rusty pair of scissors, and whatever else hides in the drawers of a pack-rat. Bible study was coming up, it was my turn to lead and I just had to have my paper. I was so prepared with the comfort of the paper, without it, I had to just free-style. I prayed and prayed that God would help me to locate the short-novel I had written over Esther. His answer: You don't need it yet.

Almost exactly a year later, my brother was clumsily searching through those same old drawers, when he pulled out a notepad and out fell the pages. His answer: NOW you need it.

God knew that it was necessary for me to remember Esther at this point in my life. Thanks to His perfect timing, today I am restored as I read how God translated to me the story of a woman of courage. A courage I lack but have been desperately seeking. A woman with love for her people, a pure heart, and a soul dripping with the desire to obey the Lord's will.

Mars Meets Earth

This is a bit out of left field, but incase you are like me and don't watch the news I thought I'd inform you of what my hilarious roommate kindly let me know last night in an e-mail. Photographers, bust out your cameras for this once in a lifetime event!

"Apparently it is an urban legend that Mars is expected have a close encounter with our planet Earth on August 27, the 239th day of the year, at aroPublish Postund 12:30 AM. The wobble of Mars orbit supposedly will bring the two planets closer together than they have ever been in thousands of years. Scientists have deemed this event as one "no one alive will ever see again" as the Red Planet is proposed to be the size of our moon.

Two FULL MOONS people. Two FULL MOONS. How can we not capitalize on this ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE?

Here is what I propose: we are going to have a small gathering of friends and dogs united at our house. We will begin the evenings festivities with watching "Mars Attacks," "Mission to Mars," "Apollo 13", "Armageddon," or simply Discovery Channel. I might even steal "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and dress as Diana Troy. I'm just saying...We will then have a meal consisting of solely space food. They make some pretty damn-delicious icecream, no trickin'. Here is the kicker: everyone MUST dress as their interpretation of a martian. Macey will be fully dressed like a creepy space invader or Mr. Spoc.

I figure we could have some beer also. And sparkling grape juice. =) I fully intend on researching alien beer. There is BOUND to be some cheesy website that makes that junk. OR OOOO...ooooo....GREEN spiked KOOLAID. Aliens LOVE KOOLAID.

I think we might also need to play 42 or something. And every time we win a hand, the winner get to make galatic space noises. I might even try to see if I can locate a light-saber...
Give me opinions. No one answered my phone calls tonight.

Hope life is beautiful where you are,
kay"

8 THINGS:

Apparently, there's a photography blog tag going around to list 8 things about yourself, so here they are:

1. My favorite munch food is ice cream: Ben & Jerry's Oatmeal Cookie Chunk & I love to take regular vanilla ice cream and crush up cinnamon pita chips to put in it.
2. I love children...and I want to name all my kids after colors Gray, Sienna, and Violet...although Violet isn't gonna make it cause Matt says it reminds him of a 98 year old.
3. When I was 12, I hated my long eyelashes, so I cut them off into short stubs. Thankfully, they grew back.
4. Most people think I am laid-back when first meeting me, but I am really the most high-strung person I know. My mind never shuts off.
5. If I could be any animal I would be an otter- they are so fun and flirty.
6. My mom was going to name me Ashlan, but changed it to Rachel.
7. I am deathly afraid of opossums. When we lived in the country, they used to "play dead" in our garage trash can. I saw one this morning at 6:30 a.m. and my stomach has been churning ever since!
8. I once took a 3-day hike through the Great Divide. Some highlights: We got hailed on, loose rocks caused me to slide down the mt. a ways, and there was definitely no toilet paper. I learned I aint THAT outdoorsy!

Preston....potential male model?

My family went to the Gaylord this weekend, and so I had an itch to practice some lighting...Preston was the target. We went around the area and took some quick pics. Let me know what you think!

This last one is just for your humor. You see my mom has probably drank about 3 times in her life, and she decided to "go a little crazy" and try a complimentary Peach Schnapps. It was of NO compliment to her. After four sips her face was as swollen as a rhinos and it was fire-engine red! A few benadryls later she was fine.

It's Trial and Error

"Let the wise listen and add to their learning,
and let the discerning get guidance."
-Proverbs 1:5

"Can't you just say you're sorry?" Matthew murmured.
I quickly batted back with a "I will say I'm sorry when I think what I've done is wrong..."

I am quickly learning the importance of a humble heart.
It's okay to be wrong. The hardest part is admitting it. Can we really expect to gain wisdom if our own pride gets in the way? No. Although criticism can sometimes feel uncomfortable, it is mandatory to self-development. It's not exactly enjoyable to hear others tell you what you need to work on- however, its necessary.

I want to be a sponge, soaking up everything that God has to teach me for that day. As Proverbs advices, you need to find disciples, mentors, fellowship- surrounding yourself with people who can sprinkle some light on the path before you.

There is never a point when any of us can "know it all." Christ came so that we may have access to His knowledge on how to live in this chaotic life. If we were always right, there would be no need for His Word.
Error is part of development and learning from those errors is not merely a part of this life...it IS this life. Without it, there's no growth. No matter how bad it hurts when I fail, its comforting to know that there is always a lesson to follow--if my heart is simply humble enough to learn it.

The Craft Receiver

I realized today that Matthew and I have odd gift-giving tendencies. I give him art, crafts, etc "girly gifts" and he gives me electronics. When let's face it, we're basically just buying for ourselves! Sad, but true. Maybe I'll buy him something with the words megabites or gigs at the end of it next time.

lazy week...

Thats right its my week OFF! No work or school. In fact, no more summer school ever for me...and I've had it since my jr. year of high school. Sweet release! Matt and I are just lounging, being bums and loving it.

But of course I can't just not work at all....so I have/am still in the process of giving my website a big ole' facelift! Check it out if you have time.

Seth + Christa Wedding

My FIRST wedding! Seth and Christa were nice enough to have a little faith in me. This wedding had all sorts of flavors: 10 bridesmaids/groomsmen, a cute little dance that the bridesmaids and bride made up, custom-made chocolate bars for the guest, etc. I wish you both all the best. Thanks for letting me be a part of your special day~

around the globe

I attached a world map of the visitors that this blog has had over the last 5 days or so! It's incredibly neat to me that there are people from Belgium, Iowa, etc popping in on this blog. Keep coming :)

Morgan- Senior Session

Meet Miss Morgan May. We had so much fun walking around taking her senior pictures. And she bought the neatest prop: her guitar! The first time I met Morgan she was singing the country song "Love, Your Baby Girl", and she has the most beautiful voice! Check out some shots of her...and marvel over how photogenic she is (i'm jealous.) For more of Miss Morgan, pics are uploaded on my main website- HERE.

"Patience, My child."

I am currently cooped up in my room, with a bad cold, and a paper to finish that is due MANANA. It's hard for me to be enthusiastic about finishing up school, because all I want to do is learn about photography--lighting rules, special tricks-of-the-trade, etc. But I have to remember that life is a series of stages. The Lord has put me here in College Station. My purpose right now is to finish up the great education that I have had the opportunity to achieve. Does this mean I enjoy school? NO. I've never been much for college.

I am called to obey the Word though, and it tells me to be diligent with what is in front of me. Galations 6:9: "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."

Maybe this photography business is not what God has in store for me in the future, but for now I feel confirmation that pursuing it is what I need to do (while balancing studying & papers). It is quickly becoming my passion- and I can't say I've felt that way about another job. No matter what will happen, I just thank the Lord for the here-and-now. The opportunity to express creativity and hopefully catch a small glimpse of the almighty Creator He is. You can see it through the 3/4 inch flower that has beautiful details on each petals and in the smiling face of a couple who is transforming from two to ONE. These are the parts of life I love to capture.

For now, I must be patient. Listening to the calling of the Father to light my path. For I know that nothing good comes of my flesh. My dreams will only flourish if they are placed in the hands of the Spirit.

boys and their toys

Matt got a Nintendo Wii this weekend. I ragged on him for while for being nearly 26 and still buying video games, that is, until I saw my 46-year old dad's enthusiasm over the games. Proof that boys will always be boys.

The face of defeat.

and girls will always be girls.

Motherhood

Something tells me I'm a bit unprepared. She likes to be tossed- dont judge me. Anywho, this is my new puppy Marlie, the 3 lbs. guard dog, who is keeping me company while I'm all alone and scared. I don't do well in empty houses.

BETH - Portrait Session

Say hello to Beth Brinker! Around A&M, this girl is a rockstar. Just a few brags on her behalf: shes the Vice President of A&M, is friends with George Strait, and yes, her hair does naturally curl in those perfect tendrils. If Matthew reads this, he's probably going to think I've got another crush. haha! I'll stop there. Thanks Beth, I had so much fun hanging out with you!

P.S. There are more pictures- and they will be on my website when it goes LIVE!

This has been my expression after six hours of working on the web design I bought from BluDomain.com... and I have finally finished!!! For now at least. I am hoping to GO LIVE this weekend! So some of you may be seeing your pretty little faces on there. Especially Miss Photogenic Brittany Hardin- who is the first bright and shining face you see when the website loads.

NEW lenses!

Matt and I have together pitched in to get two new lenses! They can do some real magic. I'm slightly addicted to them.

If you click on the above pic, you can even see the teeny tiny spider web on the heart. This is just a sneak peak at them. But so far, I'm super pleased!

July 4th

What a gorgeous sunset-- Austin, Tx is just full of them! I decided to come visit Matthew for July 4th. So we went with his summer roommate Ricky to the fireworks show they held in a field across from downtown. It was unbelievable, they even have an orchestra that plays in sync with the fireworks show!

God's creation

Who is up for a game of I spy?
I spy: a winking lizard, a firefly, and an imposter.

Happy Blogging!

Hey yall! I'm new at this so bare with me. I'd like to share with you what I'm learning from photography, and just keep you updated!
